Grace upon Grace

Grace upon Grace
by: Pastor Ryan Scheibel

1 Samuel 24:8, “David also arose afterward, went out of the cave, and called out to Saul, saying, ‘My lord the king!’ And when Saul looked behind him, David stooped with his face to the earth and bowed down.”

Saul went in, used the restroom and left not knowing David cut off a piece of his robe. This blows my mind that David came out of the cave. God just spared his life and he was safe in the cave, but David runs out of the cave to reconcile with Saul.

I’m sure David’s men were thinking that he’s gone mad. He had the chance to kill Saul and then he rushed out of the cave with 3,000 troops out on a mission to kill him. But David is thinking he could get things right with Saul.

He came to Saul in terms of utmost humility. He called out to Saul, “my lord, my king.” It’s interesting how David shows respect to Saul. He’s called the King, The Lord’s anointed. And then he bows down in reverence. He’s respecting Saul. He shows him grace upon Grace just like God does with us and gives us many chances.

What a picture of humility that David is exhibiting that reminds us of James 4:6. “God resists the proud but He gives grace to the humble.”
