1 Samuel 23:6, “Now it happened, when Abiathar, the son of Ahimelech, fled to David at Keilah, that he went down with an ephod in his hand.”
Remember Abiathar was the only priest that was left alive from the city of Nod. His father, the chief priest, was killed by Saul along with 85 priests. He went down with an ephod in his hand. Now the ephod is a vest like garment that the high priest would wear with 12 stones, representing the 12 tribes of Israel. It’s a picture of the high priest carrying the 12 tribes of the nation of Israel close to his heart but inside the breastplate were two stones in a pouch like pocket which were the Urim and Thummim. It is believed that one stone was white and the other black. He would pick out a stone and that would be the answer. I know it sounds crazy, like you’re throwing dice to find out God’s will for your life, but this was prescribed by God. God told them to inquire of him this way. David was being obedient to the law of Moses in Exodus 28:30. The priest would use the Urim and the Thummim to discern God’s will. The Urim means light and Thummim means perfection so they would use them to bring to light God’s perfect will.
The good news is we have something better. The Holy Spirit and the Word of God. The Holy Spirit is the one who leads, guides and directs us into all truth. The Holy Spirit will never contradict the word of God.
John 16:13, “The Holy Spirit will guide us into all truth and tell us things to come.”
