A Green Light

A Green Light
by: Pastor Ryan Scheibel
1 Samuel 23:3-5, “But David’s men said to him, ‘Look, we are afraid here in Judah. How much more then if we go to Keilah against the armies of the Philistines?’ Then David inquired of the Lord once again. And the Lord answered him and said ‘Arise, go down to Keilah. For I will deliver the Philistines into your hand.’ And David and his men went to Keilah and fought with the Philistines, struck them with a mighty blow, and took away their livestock. So David saved the inhabitants of Keilah.”
If you remember, this was not a trained army. These are men in debt, discontent and distressed. These 400 ragtag men will become David’s mighty men. And here they enter their first lesson of following and trusting in the Lord for victory.
I’m sure the guys are thinking, David, I appreciate your enthusiasm and heart to help people, but if we go down there, that’s one step closer to Saul. We’re going to fight the Philistines and be trapped. This is not a good idea. David could have said you guys are a bunch of babies but he didn’t do that. He inquired to the Lord a second time and I believe that shows us his humility as he listened to people around him and asks God again!
David made that important transition in his life from turning from his own wisdom, power and strength, to turning to the Lord. David prayed and inquired of the Lord not once but twice and gets a green light and was victorious!
2 Chronicles 20:15, “Do not be afraid nor dismayed because of this great multitude, for the battle is not yours, but God’s.”
